 2013 Fluke Regs -   

THIS JUST IN… In today’s (April 18th) AC Press it was announced that the 2013 Fluke regs have changed once more! The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) has approved unanimously to give back to NJ 11 more days to fish for Summer Flounder extending this year’s season to Sept. 27th rather than the originally approved Sept. 16th.

Hurricane Sandy was a factor Wednesday as other East Coast states agreed to give some of their summer flounder quota to help New Jersey and New York. New Jersey will receive 232,949 pounds or 85,392 extra flounder while New York will get 565,282 pounds or 150,022 fish. This will leave only 10,916 pounds as a buffer against over-fishing again for 2013. NY wanted to use its poundage by lowering its minimum size to 19 inches and NJ voted for the 11 extra days rather than a size reduction.

Despite the above report posted in the AC Press I am told by a reliable source that although the ASMFC has approved this option, the NJ Marine Fisheries Council has not just yet. They will be holding a meeting July 11th to determine the final end date for the 2013 Fluke season. Their concern is that if we take all 11 days at the end of the season we will most definitely overfish which will have a significant impact on the 2014 Fluke season!

Furthermore, the Sea Bass regulation will be set at the May 2nd meeting and will be posted the following day. We do know that it will open May 19th however the close date, size and bag limit has yet to be determined.
